A touchingly candid and personal account of lifelong obesity and its emotional, social and physical impact, Ellie Salser takes you on a journey that intimately chronicles her life-changing decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery. Sharing her experiences to the world in the hopes of reaching out to those struggling with weight-related issues, the book is a timeline that begins with the realization and acceptance of her weight problem. Revealing a determination and strength of character that carried Ellie through months of exhaustive research, numerous medical consultations and the difficult decision-making process, the book also details the lengthy preparation, psychological and emotional issues, the surgery, the aftermath and both the positive and negative issues she has dealt with in the 5 years since. It is with great pride that Ellie no longer sees herself as a stranger in the mirror, but a beautiful woman who successfully changed her life.

I'm giving this two stars instead of one because part of the reason I didn't like the book is that it didn't deliver what I expected. But that was partially my fault for not paying closer attention to the description. I was expecting an emphasis on the 5-year period after surgery, and the emotional and physical hurdles faced by the author during that time. What this book gave me was a long, drawn out story of the process leading up to weight loss surgery, with essentially a footnote about the "aftermath." I was, and still am, looking for a book that talks about the stranger in the mirror AFTER surgery. I am hoping to learn about how someone else is dealing with the drastic shift to self-perception that happens after a major weight loss.

The one star rating would be because the book itself is just not very good. No disrespect meant to Mrs. Salser, but it's very clear that she is not a writer. The book is meandering, repetitive and boring. If she had an editor at all, that person needs a new job. It was very hard to get through the bad writing and lack of editing. I'm sure Mrs. Salser is a lovely person, but she's just not a good writer.

I also feel like this book was a little too Pollyana-ish. I am almost one year out from gastric sleeve surgery, and I can tell you that I have struggled. My result has been very positive (much improved health and great weight loss), but the process has been stressful, exhausting, and sometimes just plain brutal. The physical challenges can be overwhelming, and the emotional roller coaster is real. This is more of a happy little surgery memoir than a true exploration of the challenging journey of weight loss surgery.

Of course, I am only one person with one opinion. If others have found the book helpful and/or enjoyable, more power to them. And good on Mrs. Salser for putting herself out there like this. But for me, this book is a resounding NO.

good book
Very compassionate and funny!
Great book.
great
Very disappointed in this story it seemed to be missing all of the majorparts and I went through the surgery way too fluffy
Really Great book and so helpful. Loved her story and how she lays everything out for you. Tons of wonderful information, no fluff
The book is an interesting telling of the author's journey from denial of her obesity to having weight loss surgery and beyond. It ends with her having lost a significant amount of weight and then regaining 20 or so pounds. I do not recommend it as an insightful journey. I hope she will revisit this in a couple of years, perhaps with some insight, and let us know how she is doing.
